From Segura to Maltby: six breakout stars from the Women’s Under-20 World Cup

With an exceptional display of talent, we highlight six players who could advance to the senior World Cup next year.

The 2026 Under-20 Women’s World Cup is moving into the knockout phase in Poland, and following a captivating group stage, we identify some of the young talents who have impressed.

Celia Segura (Spain and Barcelona)
Segura is familiar with high-stakes matches, having helped Spain win silver at the Under-17 World Cup two years ago, earning the Bronze Ball and Bronze Boot. She has taken on the role again as La Roja advanced smoothly through their group. Her four goals against New Caledonia showcased her natural scoring ability, and she has also contributed significantly with her advanced technical skills and intuitive knack for creating space and locating teammates. Her back-heel assist to set up Pau Comendador against China was particularly memorable. A graduate of the Barcelona academy, the 19-year-old forward made her senior team debut in February and will join Atlético Madrid on a season-long loan after this tournament ends.
